Sully's Character Keeper for Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game
A downloadable project
EDIT on 2/14/23: For whatever reason, the sheet name got changed and I am unsure why. I posted a new link for the core rules. This time it does not force you to copy sheet, but in order to download and actually use the sheet, you MUST make your own copy! Any requests to edit the sheet will be ignored and denied. Once you make a copy, you’ll be able to edit it and share it with your players. I do plan on making an update to this sheet since the Wan Shi Tong Playbooks are now publicly available on Magpie’s website, but I do not have an ETA on this update .
Hello everyone!
This is my Google Sheet Character Keeper for use with Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game by Magpie Games. In addition, here is also a Google Doc Reference sheet with all of the Playbook Moves sorted by Stat and all Exchange Techniques sorted by Approach as an additional resource for the table.
The Keeper and Reference Sheet are both up to date with the preview version of the core rules of the game.
I edited the links of these files to (hopefully) automatically prompt you to make a copy for your own Google Drive. If it doesn't then you'll need to make a copy. Either way, I recommend making more than 1 copy for yourself of each so you have spares for future games that you may decide to run.
Note two other important things:
- The Keeper and Reference Sheets are not replacements for skipping the Core Rules of the game (at least for the GM)
- Once you have a copy... it is yours to edit however you see fit!
That second point is important! The Keeper and Reference Sheet are set up for my liking! It may not be for everyone's tastes. I cannot keep re-editing the sheet over and over again to suit everyone. The sheet intentionally lacks the use of many formulae and is designed to be somewhat "modular" for relatively easy customization for you and your table.
Here are some Pros and Cons of the sheet...
Pros
- Playbooks
- Playbooks are individualized tabs, which greatly reduces scrolling as opposed to columnar sheets which often requires more scrolling to find what you’re looking for on your sheet.
- Key information is at the top of every sheet: Stats, Balance, Conditions, Statuses, Background, Training, and Growth are all front and center.
- Nearly everything on the sheet is now size 12 font to assist with ease of reading (although some compromises needed to be made)
- All the Playbook Moves and Features are front and center and populated in front of you. Dropdown menus and auto population via Vlookup carry the unfortunate side effect of A) The inability to carry over helpful font formatting (such as bolding key phrases in the Moves) as well as B) The inability to edit the text right in front of you, should the need ever arise.
- Techniques, on the other hand, utilize such Vlookup formulae. The dropdown menu also shows whether the Technique is Universal or related to a particular Training.
- Session Overview
- For those, especially the GM, who needs access to see everyone at a glance- Session Overview serves this purpose. Clocks can be placed here as well as NPC Templates from the GM Tab.
- GM Tab
- The GM Framework has been placed here, as well as all Era-specific GM Moves in the event you may find those helpful.
- NPC templates are here. They utilize the same Technique Lookup as the PCs, making it easier to see what an NPC can do at a given moment.
Cons
- Playbooks
- Despite everything being individualized, there is still a hefty enough amount of scrolling I was unable to avoid. This was due to:
- Size 12 font comes up the best when it comes to reading the Moves. Anything less is a bit of a strain to notice.
- Avatar Legends carries some of the longest Moves in just about any Powered by the Apocalypse game.
- The Playbooks also carry elements of asymmetry. The varying lengths of Moves and keeping each at 12 point font required different amounts of merged cells for each Move. This means that no Playbook feature or set of Moves could be consistent with each other.
- This also means they could not be reliably referenced as part of the Session Overview Tab so that everyone could see the Moves and Techniques players had access to.
- Because Vlookup was not an ideal feature for Playbook Moves, getting Moves from other Playbooks will take additional elbow grease.
- This is why I have included that second reference document on my itch page where all Playbook Moves are categorized by stat and- while not entirely needed- all Techniques have been categorized by Exchange Approach
- Despite everything being individualized, there is still a hefty enough amount of scrolling I was unable to avoid. This was due to:
- Session Overview
- NPC Templates, especially for Master and Legendary NPCs, are very long in order to fit on the Session Overview Tab due to their Techniques.
